IQF Long Beach

Last week I was in San Diego for a class reunion with Frankfurt American High School alum — it happened to be the same week that the International Quilt Festival was featured at the Long Beach Convention Center. Oh my! I hitched a ride with Kay Laboda and we spent a day at the festival.

Many of the exhibits prohibit photography so, while I’m unable to share images, I want to comment on one exhibit in particular:  Rituals, co-curated by Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison of Dinner at 8 Artists, was a standout for me. Forty-two artists depicted close-to-their-hearts rituals in a 60″ x 24″ format. It was a special treat to join Jamie and Leslie for a personal tour of the exhibit where I also learned about their jurying process and intent for the exhibit.

The Artist’s Village exhibit was just plain delightful!

And the Twelve By Twelve exhibit, sponsored by the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection, was clearly a favorite among viewers. Here are just a couple of images:

each of the groupings represents a challenge theme interpreted by the 12 members of the group.

Here are a few images of quilts from the Celebrate Spring! exhibit that blew my socks off.

a detail. . .

Not my style of piecing, but the quilting dazzled me.

I think YUM says it. . .

Absolutely love the 12×12′s! Of course you turned a reunion into an opportunity to enjoy more fabric art!! Can’t wait to hear about the reunion too!

  3. It was a pleasure to have you along for one of the curator’s tours. Thank you for your kind words about “Rituals”!
