We grow many of our own vegetables and we purchase fresh produce at our local farmer’s markets. This year we decided to take advantage of something even more convenient by picking up a box of vegetables that are delivered to a neighbors house by a local organic farmer — Shooting Star CSA of Suisun Valley, CA. I must confess that from the first box we were spoiled. Here is what we got in our box this week. Yum!
The farmer picks only the vegetables and fruits that are fully ripe, ready to eat, so we don’t know what we’ll be getting from week to week. I enjoy this element of mystery. I also welcome the opportunity to pour over my cook books finding new ways to cook turnips or cabbage or kale. Bon Appetit!
looks wonderful, am picking my first zucchini today. Always love recipes for them… Ate my last English Pea this morning.. .can not find them fresh in the store.. but planted late, so did not get as many as last year.. Last year probably had about 10+ lbs from 4 wine barrels! and can put the Sweet Peas in the same, and have flowers! The share the space well.
I can’t wait for my tomatoes to ripen! They will be great with anything in the box any week!
My daughter does the same thing, in San Carlos. She LOVES the variety. Personally, I’d have to be MUCH more organized to be able to spontaneously plan to use surprise ingredients. 🙂 I think we are spoiled, living so close to the source of so many good growing things. The best thing about living in California, to be sure… 🙂
I love the variety too. Some of the veggies are ones I don’t often purchase on my own so this gives me new chances to get acquainted with them. And they are oh so good when they’re this fresh.
Franki, this is what I call a delicious gorgeous luxurious necessity! Thanks for the photo. I’m drooling.
I agree with all the adjectives! And it’s reasonable $$wise. Doesn’t get any better than that.
Do not know of anything like this in NW Ohio, but then that is why we have a small garden and herbs on the deck. Our radish crop was great this year, started them early in a sheltered flower bed near the deck. Roma and Heirloom Brandywine and a yellow cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, eggplant, a banana pepper, basil, oregano, dill, chives, parsley, mint and onions . I love to scan my cookbooks and the internet for interesting new recipes, about half the books on my Kindle Fire are cookbooks,
We are on the same page Sue! But my cookbooks are in the kitchen. I know the recipe was good by the comments I make all over the page. . . and the occasional food stain.
awesome! you’re ready to start your home version of “Chopped” using ingredients from your organic mystery basket.
ha! I’m sans cable so had to look up “Chopped.” You’re right! I’m ready.
