Creative Framing and Gallery has an international art show this month featuring pastels by Senol Sak of Bolu, Turkey, prints by Maria Regina Pinto Pereira of São Paulo, Brazil and paintings by Mellissa Read-Devine of Sydney, Australia.
Senol was the only artist able to come to the United States for the exhibit reception and I hosted him during the first half of his stay. Senol works in water-color, pastels, acrylic and oil paint to create his art which exclusively features fish. One evening I watched while Senol created two paintings as a thank-you gift. I was delighted to have oil pastel sticks for his use. He asked me to choose two photographs from a collection he brought with him. I chose a Blowfish:
The beginning. . .
he moves quickly. . .
layering the marks of color. . .
refining. . .
until. . .
finally. . .
he is happy.
My second choice was a Weedy Seadragon. I have fond memories of a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium where I saw this creature and many more.
Even though I just watched the first pastel emerge
the speed of his work pace
is surprising.
Once painted, the words are layered. . .
including the scientific name and information about the habitat and characteristics of the Weedy Seadragon.
Thank you Senol!
