I have spent the last several months working with Holly Knott to refresh and repair my website. There were too many things not happening – for example, my blog posts were not being sent out to subscribers! – and I had no control over it. Well. That and other issues are solved and I have what I think of as a fresh new look. I hope that you will take a look around, test navigating here and there, and let me know what you think. Honestly! You can do that through a comment on this posting, or you can contact me off site by sending me a direct email at frankikohler@yahoo.com. Either way, I’d love your input. And if any of you are thinking about creating or refreshing your own website, I cannot speak highly enough about what Holly brought to the task. Please feel free to contact me for more information on her work.
I have just received my copy of the catalog for Printed & Stitched. Click on image for a larger view.
I am always most thrilled to be juried into exhibits which feature art from a variety of disciplines. Being accepted in these exhibits reinforces my belief that I am creating art, not just ‘being crafty.’ Here is a portion of the curators’ essay in the catalog which says it well:
“Printed imagery and sewn fibers are an ancient combination. At their confluence is pigment and pressure, woven layers, and borders sewn with fiber. There is color and also texture, form, intention, ingenuity, and many stories. Textile and print go hand in hand, and the combinations are constantly be reinvented. Printmakers often reference fiber and stitching, while textile artists and art quilters increasingly incorporate printed elements into their work.
In Printed & Stitched, the California Society of Printmakers (CSP) and Studio Art Quit Associates (SAQA) worked together to examine the overlap between the hand pulled print and the art quilt through work that is both printed and stitched.
The curatorial team shared a vision. We all wanted to recognize boundary crossing work, to encourage experimentation, and to engage with the ongoing, decades-long debate about art vs. craft.”
In all, 83 artists responded to the Call, submitting over 160 pieces. The work of 57 artists is included in Printed & Stitched. My art quilt Eucalyptus is among them. For more details about this piece, click on the ‘Portfolio’ tab above, then select the ‘Nature Inspired’ category, then click on the image of Eucalyptus.
The exhibit will travel to the Grace Hudson Museum and be on view from October 29, 2023 through March 17, 2024. I hope that you will find the time to see the exhibit. The next venue will be the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles beginning April 28, 2024. More on that as the time draws near.
