Last week I did some printing and painting with my friend Denise. When I saw her fabric stash it was like a slap on the side of the head. Today I’ve begun the reorganization of my stash . . . top shelf done!
As I’m going through the stacks I’m weeding out the fabrics I won’t be using anymore and I’ve begun selecting fabrics for the next project. Based on the results with shelf one and the condition of shelf two, it’s clear how much easier the selection process will be in the future. Thank you Denise!
How do you organize your supplies?

I need to weed out also… but my goal now is to either dye it, paint it or use it… Had a challenge, besides the obvious challenge of theme,,my personal one was not to buy fabric…

Great goal Vivian! One of the ladies I met in Lonni Rossi’s class brought a lot of her ‘ugly’ fabric and painted it. It was great fun to see the transitions! Go for it.

So where are your painted, stamped, stencilled & screened fabrics from Empty Spools? Mary Ann

Ha! Oh, they’re in there — most of them anyway. A couple are pulled for my next project. Stay tuned!

I have a big stash and I organize around color, type (hand dyed, solids, plaids, etc) and size of fabric: fat qtrs in plastic clam shell containers, 1-3 yds wrapped around acid-free comic book cardboards and over 3 yds stored as flat folds in plastic bins-all labeled. Oh and then there are special categories for silk, African, high-end garment and things bought to go together. You have a great system going there.

I’ve kept this to grouping by color. I like the fact that you can easily see the look of the fabric and which pieces are larger.

It’s looking good. I can even recognize some of your fabrics as ones that I have as well. I like the idea of weeding out fabrics that won’t find their way into a quilt.

A simple and effective system! Thanks again for the inspiration.

I do, but it never stays neat for very long! 🙁

For years, my organizing happened every time I moved. On average that was every two years. Now I’ve lived the longest period for my entire life and organizing has to happen at the same rate, but it doesn’t. So I’ve had to start thinking about what really matters to me, what I want to do with my life, and how I want to spend my time. That should make it lots easier to then organize my stash. Wish me luck!

Prioritizing is always a good starting point. You’re on you way!
