I have been wanting to do some hand stitching for some time. Ten days into Oregon’s stay-at-home order became my tipping point for finding something fun and easy that would allow me to create something in my lap.
I went to Laura Wasilowski’s website and checked out her tutorials. There are quite a few fun images to choose from. I selected the Leaf on Wool stitch-along pattern. I purchased the two hand-dyed yarns and the felted wool scrap. My kit arrived in a flash.
I just organized myself today and have begun stitching. It feels so comforting to do this simple stitching – stitches that I learned at my grandmother’s knee and haven’t done for many years. Here is my beginning:
I have stitched the outline of the leaf shape in white yarn. Now I am using a back stitch to create the edge of the leaf.
I don’t plan to rush this project in the least. I’ll never enter this for an exhibit. I have no deadline. But we’ll see. Once I start something, it’s usually difficult for me not to hunker down and see rapid progress. Hmmmm, this could be more than one lesson for me! Stay tuned.
I hope that you are doing something comforting while you keep your neighbors safe. Today is day 15 of our stay-at-home new life. What day is it for you? Be strong. Be patient. Be kind.

Day 23 for us in the Bay Area. I have been sewing face masks for our local hospital nurses for 2 weeks now. The mask won’t stop the virus but the nurses can wear them over the medical N95 masks. It will help with another layer to protect the N95. I, too, love handwork. I find it very relaxing which is a good thing right now! Stay healthy, Franki!

I’ve also stitched masks for friends and health care workers here. Quite a few local companies, such as Nike, have stepped up to this need as well. Doing my best to stay well. Time to stay calm and carry on!

Have fun! The diversion will be therapeutic, as you expected.

I’m enjoying this a lot. I can see taking out some fabric and doing surface design for postcards as well. Then there’s eco printing paper cards now that we have trees and bushes leafing. There’s the up side to the timing of all this.

sounds like all is well with you – or at least well-ish considering the times. Same here . sending love

Doing my best to keep calm and carry on! Aren’t we lucky that we got our lunch date in before the restaurants closed? I’m so glad. Sending love back. xo

i LOVE Laura’s hand-dyed Perle cottons and have been known to order bunches at once! We are now on day 26, and we are doing well. Hubs is in the garden a lot. I’ve been resizing and uploading over 200 images for my redesigned website, painted four pieces of cloth for new work, sewed 4 masks for VIPS, proofing the tutorial for the organic stitching class I bailed on in France, and hand-stitching a morning walk…and walking Mops. And BONUS I have not BAKED a thing! Overachiever much?!!! xo

First time for this, but found your comment in SPAM. ARGH! You are more than busy and will have a very long list of accomplishments when life returns to normal.
Laura’s hand-dyed Perle cotton is heavenly to handle. I may be ordering more myself, though her colors are not my normal palette. I don’t think of them as yours either! BTW, I haven’t baked either. I’m cooking up a storm though.
