I was searching for an image of my completed Sumac quilt when I realized that I hadn’t taken a photograph of it and that meant that I didn’t follow up to my September 9, 2017 posting about starting this piece! Talk about distracted! Since it’s been a stretch of time since I shared this piece, you might want to check out the original post by clicking on the link above.
I always approach quilting with the idea that I want the focus on the star of the show. In this case, the star is an eco print of a sumac leaf. I wanted a soft, natural-looking color combination to surround the leaf so I chose a variegated cotton yellow-green thread by Oliver Twists. The circles seemed just the right touch.
The painted silk fabric to the right has plenty going on with color and a splash of glitz, so I chose to stitch it in place with a tiny zigzag stitch in a closely matching color then accent the curve with an old-fashioned feather stitch. For the hand-painted silk on the bottom of the sumac, I again used a close-color-match thread, this time outlining the pattern marks.
My stash of hand-dyed cotton fabric supplied the brown for most of the binding and I used a bit of the hand-painted yellow-orange silk to finish. This quilt measures 12″ square.
I’m rather pleased with Sumac. I hope it was worth the wait!
