The opening artist reception for Put Your Best Foot Forward, Foot-Square Works from the Northern CA-Northern NV Region of SAQA was last night at Creative Framing & Gallery in Oakland, CA. The gallery was filled with quite a lovely and lively buzz the whole evening. The gallery is small, making cooperation among viewers necessary. This […]

Rhubarb Update and a New Project
If I want to harvest any rhubarb this year from this front-yard plant, I’ll have to remove the blooming stalk. It has reached 58″ tall and competes with the Eddie’s White Wonder Dogwood. Once the stalk was removed I could get a nice shot of the fully opened flowers. The stalk is a full inch […]
Fixing a Weighty Problem
When I took Forget Me Not: Collaboration with Grandma off the wall to deliver to the Pence Gallery I noticed a sag in the fabric on the bottom right corner. This corresponds to the location of the label on the back of the quilt. Clearly, the addition of a broderie perse rose surrounded by beads […]
Put Your Best Foot Forward Open!
The first Nor CA/Nor NV regional exhibit featuring art quilts of SAQA artists opened earlier this week. Creative Framing & Gallery is hosting this exciting event. See more details about the artist receptions and location under “Exhibitions of My Work” to the right. Read the nice article that Sumiko Saulson published in the San Francisco […]
Beads — so many choices
I have been invited by Dinner at Eight Artists to submit work for a juried invitational exhibit which will premiere August 1-4, 2013 at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach, California. Though I’ve been working on it since December, I haven’t been able to share it here because one of the stipulations of the […]
Put Your Best Foot Forward – A must-see exhibit!
Put Your Best Foot Forward will open April 1 featuring foot-square works from 26 artists of the Northern CA-Northern NV Region of SAQA. This is not just ‘another exhibit’ my friends. This is the first exhibit for the SAQA region I have been a member of since 2005! And it will feature some of the […]
Pence Gallery: Opening of By Hand Exhibit
I attended the opening of By Hand, Extraordinary Fine Craft in California in Davis last Friday. The whole of downtown Davis was buzzing with activity. The restaurants were full, parking lots were packed and so was the gallery. A very refreshing scene in these times. The large flags, well-lit sign and peek at the crowd […]
Pence Gallery Exhibit: By Hand
When I dropped off my quilt Forget Me Not, Collaboration with Grandma at the Pence Gallery last week I was given postcards to promote the exhibit. It was a very nice surprise to see that the gallery chose a detail photo of my piece for the postcard (bottom right). The Pence presents its first juried […]
Sunflower Scrap IV Fini
Done. And I’m rather happy with the nuanced differences in this one. I outline quilted the vines and leaves with the gold-orange thread and tried my hand with some new quilting designs. I used two colors of beads in the center. See the first three in this series here.
Sunflower Scrap IV Progress
When I put this small quilt on my design wall for further consideration last week, I thought my dilemma was the next step in the background quilting design. Yesterday I realized it wasn’t the background that needed clearer thinking, it was the foreground. Here I have added a leaf and tendril to the bottom right […]
Sunflower Scrap IV
I’m making progress on the 4th sunflower art quilt in a series. The background fabric is a beige upholstery cotton left over from a window seat project. The weight of this fabric will enable me to quilt with fewer stops to block during the process. This sunflower is the largest one yet, so it dominates […]
Word for 2013
It’s the first day of 2013 and I am looking forward. A review of 2012 was done on a monthly, if not weekly basis, with the words simplicity and focus as yardsticks. I need to keep a tight rein on my actions to avoid the R word — regret — which usually leads to another […]
Accepted!
I’m thrilled to share that Forget Me Not: Collaboration with Grandma has been juried into By Hand: Extraordinary Craft in California which will open at the Pence Gallery in Davis, CA, on February 8, 2013. This is the first juried exhibit of fine craft that the Pence will host. Their definition of the term ‘fine […]
Unconditional Love
Can anyone have too much? I think not! Mendelssohn has once again inspired a design in fabric — this time for the postcard trade I’m doing with the Typography theme group of Postmark’d Art. (I shared two of the postcards I’ve already received from this trade here.) Here is Mendelssohn digitized — that’s software speak […]
Creative Procrastination
My holiday cards arrived yesterday. But having just rescued my muse from captivity in Illinois (If this sounds confusing, become enlightened here.) I am more keenly aware of her bidding so I’m in the studio. Another scrap of sunflower fabric has presented itself for audition. I have appliqued it to a soft peachy fabric and […]
Forget Me Not, Collaboration with Grandma
I am very much enjoying having the Forget Me Not quilt home, hanging in a prominent place. While it was hanging at the gallery I made the label for it. It was a great opportunity for me to salvage yet another small treasure from Grandma, a piece of broderie perse that I removed from a […]
More From IQF Houston
There were so many incredible quilts at the Houston show! Here are a few more that I especially enjoyed. Suspicion by Tanya Brown is a diminutive quilt of 11 inches square. Tanya used Tsukineko ink, watercolor and free-motion quilting on cotton fabric for this original design. Poly Dressler Bech said she played with solar printing […]
International Quilt Festival Houston
I’m still a’flutter from my trip to IQF in Houston. Jenny Lyon was my travel partner and we were a perfect combo — she is high energy and kept me on my toes. She started posting about the show before we left Houston. You can see what she had to say about it here. When […]
Art Reception
The reception for my solo show at Creative Framing & Gallery was Saturday, October 20 from 6 – 9 pm. People came and went almost as if they had a time-stamped ticket which meant that the gallery was never over crowded and I had an opportunity to talk with everyone who came — a real […]
PIQF
I went to opening day of the Pacific International Quilt Festival at the Santa Clara Convention Center yesterday. So much eye candy! So much fun! Here are a few of the art quilts that stopped me in my tracks. I’m sorry I cut off the top edge of this charming quilt by Jenny Lyon. Love […]
Building a Collection
I was the lucky bidder on three foot-square art quilts during the SAQA Auction this year so I have to admit that I’m building a collection. Here is Spring Moons by Jeanne Marklin. The colors and texture of this quilt are just plain yummy. And I love the fact that her signature in the bottom […]
SAQA Auction
The annual SAQA on-line auction sold 267 art quilts, raising $54,200 for the organization. If you would like to see all the quilts that were available click here. Different View III by Mayann Weinberg came home to me yesterday. I am completely charmed by it. I love the way the muted colors swirl into one […]
Sunflower Scrap III Done
The third one of the Sunflower Scrap series was completed last weekend and hung on Monday in my solo show. This 12″ x 12″ size is simply wonderful for experimentation. There may be a few more of these in my future. See the first two of this series here and here.
